The stage adaptation of Tom Schulman's screenplay for Peter Weir's film arrives in Lisbon in a co-production by Tenda and Teatro da Trindade, with Diogo Infante as teacher John Keating, who wins over the students of a Vermont boarding school with methods opposed to the institution's conservative principles.
In the early 1990s, a film by the experienced Australian director Peter Weir became a huge popularity phenomenon all over the world. Widely nominated for the Oscars, Dead Poets Society would lose to the almost forgotten Driving Miss Daisy, but would earn Tom Schulman the award for Best Original Screenplay, and would inscribe in pop culture a Latin phrase from a poem by Horace, 'Carpe Diem' (in free translation, 'seize the day'). Already in this century, Schulman decided to adapt the film's screenplay to the stage for a production of the Classic Stage Company, directed by the award-winning John Doyle. After its premiere in New York, in 2016, the play was recently staged in Paris with enormous success, and now arrives in Lisbon in a co-production of Tenda and Teatro da Trindade, with Diogo Infante in the role of John Keating. The story takes place at a boarding school in Vermont, in the United States, at the end of the 1950s, when a recently arrived literature teacher gradually wins over his students with methods antagonistic to the institution's deeply conservative principles.
