The Cinemateca Portuguesa pays its first tribute to Brigitte Bardot with a retrospective spanning her career — from the myth created by Roger Vadim to her devotion to the animal cause — and her musical side, with a “surprise video clip” screened at every session. Tickets cost 3,20€.
Brigitte Bardot “After a youth devoted, and sacrificed, to the cinema, she founded and ran, from La Madrague, a foundation for the defence of animal rights. As she once said, ‘I gave my beauty and my youth to men. Now I am going to give my wisdom and my experience to the animals’ (quoted by Carla Quevedo in Vidas Perfeitas: Um Livro de Obituários). Transformed by men and by the cinema into an object of desire and exploitation, she had tempestuous relationships with some of them, starting with her first husband, Roger Vadim, who propelled her to a new level of international recognition, thereby helping to create one of the most inescapable sex symbols of the 20th century. She was ‘the’ woman that God created in Vadim's celebrated film, in which B.B. co-stars with Jean-Louis Trintignant, with whom she fell in love on and off screen, hastening the end of her marriage to the director, even though they remained friends and professional partners. (…). She thought about death every day of her life and, in fact, fatality or fatalism is clearly present in a significant part of the films that made her famous, in a career lived intensely, begun in adolescence and ended early, when she was only 39 springs old — the age at which she retired from showbiz to devote herself to the animal cause. (…). If there is the wild and damned side and the sensual and sensitive side in the story on and off screen, if we have the side of the cinema (and of men) and that of the animals (and of politics), it is worth recalling the actress's musical career, which goes far beyond the recording she made with Serge Gainsbourg, in 1967, pre-Jane Birkin, of Je t'aime… moi non plus. Bardot's most popular songs, some of them made with Gainsbourg's collaboration, were celebrated on television in music films by François Reichenbach, a somewhat forgotten filmmaker of the Nouvelle Vague.
