The Cinemateca Portuguesa launches a complete retrospective of producer Paulo Branco: some 270 feature films spanning more than 45 years, shown at a rate of ten films a month until 2029, with monthly conversations with the producer and a preamble devoted to his early days as a programmer in Paris.
This month marks the start of the most colossal cycle this house has ever organised: a complete cycle of producer Paulo Branco, that is, a programme made up of the roughly 270 feature films he produced over more than 45 years, between 1980 and the present day. The model defined for this enormous showcase is as follows: we will present ten films per month over (at least) two and a half years. The order of presentation is neither chronological nor by director. Each month, films will be chosen and mixed from the nearly five decades of work Paulo Branco has already amassed as a producer. There will also be, on a monthly basis, a more in-depth conversation with Paulo Branco (who, moreover, and as far as his availability allows, will attend some screenings), where the films shown during the month in question will be discussed. At the start of this long cycle, which will run until 2029, we also include a preamble illustrating Paulo Branco's first stage in cinema — that of programmer — presenting five of the films he screened at the Action République cinema in Paris.
