Third session of the Transatlantic Biographies programme, a guided visit and conversation about the lives of António (or Vitória) and Francisco Manicongo, enslaved Black people persecuted by the Portuguese Inquisition for gender transgressions.

Full details

Brief Introduction Transatlantic Biographies is a programme of visits to the permanent exhibition of the Museu de Lisboa – Palácio Pimenta, followed by a conversation about slavery, the Inquisition and religiosity. The third session proposes a critical immersion in the lives of enslaved Black people persecuted by the Portuguese Inquisition for gender transgressions. Synopsis Two 16th-century cases were selected: that of António (or Vitória), an enslaved Black person in Portugal, originally from the Kingdom of Benin, and that of Francisco Manicongo, an enslaved Black person in Brazil, originally from the Kingdom of Kongo. Both affirmed feminine gender identities. Condemned for sodomy, a category that at the time covered sexual and gender behaviours considered deviant, these individuals were subjected to severe punishments for expressing identities outside the colonial and Christian norm. By giving visibility to these silenced stories, we invite reflection on the historical mechanisms of control over racialized and dissident bodies. Through inquisitorial sources and contemporary research, the activity offers a space to discuss the intersections between racism, colonialism and transphobia, highlighting how gender resistance was present in the trajectories of enslaved people and continues to resonate in current struggles for memory and historical reparation.
