Beethoven's Ninth
Nona de Beethoven
Live music
Monday 19 October
The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, conducted by Pedro Neves, performs Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which ends in the famous Ode to Joy, alongside Eurico Carrapatoso's A Canção da Urze and the world premiere of Alexêi Tolpygo's Três Poemas Portugueses.
When it premiered in Vienna in 1824, the Choral Symphony revealed an unprecedented formal complexity, an orchestration that opened new creative horizons, and artistic and ideological premises that profoundly marked the entire symphonic production of the nineteenth century. Even today, it has a monumental importance. At the end, it includes the famous Ode to Joy, a free adaptation of a poem by Friedrich Schiller that exalts the values of freedom and fraternity. For the value of its message, it became the anthem of the Council of Europe (1972) and of the European Union (1985). In this programme, it appears alongside two other works in which poetry likewise plays a prominent role. Eurico Carrapatoso paid homage to Miguel Torga in A Canção da Urze. In an absolute premiere, Alexêi Tolpygo gives voice to Florbela Espanca, Álvaro de Campos and Mário de Sá-Carneiro. Programme. Eurico Carrapatoso A Canção da Urze (Homage to Miguel Torga).
