Translated as “music” in Japanese, Ongaku served as a cover for the advances of the mythical Group Ongaku, an artistic collective formed in 1958 where names like Yasunao Tone or Takehisa Kosugi were active, in the creation of truly free and exploratory music on Japanese soil. Without entering into the free improvisation and radicalism of these pioneers, this trio traces its Ongaku a few years after that opening with the appearance of the lysergic folk rock of Happy End by Haruomi Hosono, who would go on to found Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978. A more spiritual and geographical reference, with the historical weight that inevitably has for thinking for the first time about a truly Japanese electronic pop, there was in the YMO era the same thirst for discovery through the most playful path that pulses in Maya Ongaku's music. After their debut with the atmospheric and enchanted folk tones of 'Approach to Anima' in 2023, in a continuum of transatlantic acid folk inspirations that has long been Japanese by right through groups like the aforementioned Happy End or Nagisa Ni Te, they delivered in 'Electronic Phantoms' that body to electronics, invoking analog and modular ghosts, where the infinite pulse of kosmische, the dreamy side of United States of America and ethereal descent in Broadcast, guitars between the end of psychedelia and the swing of balearic beat and the welcoming melodies of YMO intertwine with flutes and that folk aura that escapes into urban landscapes. Traduzida como “música” em japonês, Ongaku serviu de carapuça para os avanços do mítico Group Ongaku , colectivo artístico formado em 1958 onde militavam nomes como Yasunao Tone ou Takehisa Kosugi , na criação de uma música verdadeiramente livre e exploratória em solo nipónico. Sem entrar pela improvisação livre e pelo radicalismo desses pioneiros, este trio traça a sua Ongaku já volvidos uns anos desde essa abertura com a aparição do folk rock lisérgico dos Happy End de Haruomi Hosono que viria a fundar em 1978 a Yellow Magic Orchestra. Referência mais espiritual e geográfica, com o peso histórico que inevitavelmente tem para que se pensasse pela primeira vez numa pop electrónica verdadeiramente japonesa, houve nos tempos da YMO uma mesma sede de descoberta pela via mais lúdica que palpita na música de Maya Ongaku. Após a estreia com as tonalidades folky atmosféricas e encantadas de ‘Approach to Anima’ em 2023, num contínuo de inspirações transatlânticas acid folk que faz tempo é já japonês de direito por via de grupos como os já citados Happy End ou Nagisa Ni Te, entregaram em ‘Electronic Phantoms’ esse corpo à electrónica, invocando fantasmas analógicos e modulares, onde a pulsação infinita da kösmische, o lado sonhador de United States of America e descendência etérea em Broadcast, guitarras entre o final do psicadelismo e o balanço da balearic beat e as melodias acolhedoras da YMO se enredam com as flautas e a tal aura folk que se escapa para paisagens urbanas.
