Actress Diana Nicolau makes her debut as a theatre author with an intimate monologue about being a woman, trauma, motherhood, depression and the end of humanity, drawing on video, new circus and dance.

Best known to the general public for her television work, actress Diana Nicolau made her debut as a theatre author with a piece built from texts written over the last few years. After successful runs at Clube Estefânia and CAL, the monologue now returns at Teatro do Bairro. "As change was happening around me, and I waited to cross the border of Peru on foot, or to be seen in the bread queue, at the tax office or in a hospital chair, I scribbled hundreds of stories in notebooks the size of the pockets of my trousers," the author says about the written material used in Desconfortável, um monólogo. It is precisely "discomfort", understood as "what we feel immediately before change happens", that Diana Nicolau uses as a premise to, in an intimate register and from an admittedly "uncomfortable" position, talk about what it is to be a woman, about dealing with trauma and rejection, about facing the "ambivalence of motherhood" and depression, or about managing to keep living while perceiving the end of humanity due to environmental problems. A monologue of total commitment in which the author and actress draws on a varied set of stage devices and artistic languages, such as video, new circus and dance. Conhecida do grande público, sobretudo, pelos seus trabalhos para televisão, a atriz Diana Nicolau estreou-se como autora no teatro com um trabalho que parte de textos escritos ao longo dos últimos anos. Depois do sucesso nas passagens que fez pelo Clube Estefânia e CAL, o monólogo repõe agora no Teatro do Bairro. “Enquanto a mudança à minha volta acontecia, e eu esperava para atravessar a pé a fronteira do Peru, ou para ser atendida na fila do pão, das finanças ou numa cadeira de hospital, fui rabiscando centenas de histórias em cadernos do tamanho do meu bolso das calças”, conta a autora a propósito da matéria escrita usada em Desconfortável, um monólogo . É, precisamente, o “desconforto”, entendido como “aquilo que sentimos imediatamente antes de a mudança acontecer”, que Diana Nicolau utiliza como premissa para, em registo intimista e numa posição assumidamente “desconfortável”, falar de como é ser mulher, de como lidar com o trauma e a rejeição, de como enfrentar a “ambivalência da maternidade” e a depressão, ou de como conseguir continuar a viver enquanto se perceciona o fim da humanidade devido aos problemas ambientais. Um monólogo de total entrega onde a autora e atriz recorre a um conjunto variado de dispositivos cénicos e linguagens artísticas, como o vídeo, o novo circo e a dança.
