When sunlight passes through raindrops, refraction occurs: white light is decomposed into the seven colors that form it. The rainbow shows what is beyond the apparent, what we see, the light, the white: it shows what white is. The Rainbow series, by Paulo Paz, consists of seven photographs, named after the seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Color is a feeling, a sense, an emotion. All images are, naturally, black and white. Seven. Each image is made up of a collage of seven copies of the same image: Paulo Paz starts from a print, enlarges it on an old photocopier, changes the scale, the disturbances introduced by the apparatus. And he crumples the sheets, then smooths them out. We see, feel the creases, he tears one of the vertical sides of the image, overlaps the seven copies out of phase, assuming the tear, the last image completes the first. Inside, the image develops, extends, is the same image, builds a new image. The photographs are of the same space: the fort, from the terrace, the bastion, the sea, the sky, the horizon, the infinite. Seven, symbolically, is the number of plenitude. Quando a luz solar atravessa as gotas da água da chuva, dá-se a refração da luz: decompõe-se a luz branca nas sete cores que a formam. O arco-íris mostra o que está para além do aparente, do que vemos, da luz, do branco: mostra o que é o branco. A série Arco-Íris , de Paulo Paz, é composta por sete fotografias, que tomam o nome das sete cores: vermelho, laranja, amarelo, verde, azul, anil, violeta. A cor é um sentir, um sentido, uma emoção. Todas as imagens são, naturalmente a preto e branco. Sete. Cada imagem é constituída por uma colagem de sete cópias da mesma imagem: Paulo Paz parte de uma impressão, amplia numa fotocopiadora antiga, altera a escala, as perturbações introduzidas pelo aparatus. E amarrota as folhas, alisa-as depois. Vemos, sentimos os vincos, rasga um dos lados verticais da imagem, sobrepõe desfasadamente as sete cópias assumindo o rasgado, a última imagem completa a primeira. No interior, a imagem desenvolve-se, prolonga-se, é a mesma imagem, constrói uma nova imagem. As fotografias são de um mesmo espaço: o forte, desde o terraço, o baluarte, o mar, o céu, o horizonte, o infinito. Sete, simbolicamente é o número da plenitude.
