Synopsis Commented concert by Rita Blanco. Romantic Melodramas: The Beginning of Gothic Literature Rita Blanco and Nuno Vieira de Almeida Bringing together works composed between 1826 and 1899, this recital traverses some of the most fascinating expressions of musical romanticism, simultaneously revealing signs of a modernity that would transform European artistic language. Between Schubert's melancholy, Schumann's singular conception of melodrama, and the harmonic boldness of Liszt and Strauss, a universe of intense dramatic force emerges, where word and music unite to explore the territories of dream, restlessness, and the supernatural. Inspired by narratives marked by mystery and terror, these works anticipate sonorities and atmospheres that would leave a deep mark on the history of music. From the unsettling chromaticism of The Castle by the Sea and The Sad Monk to the devastating intensity of Lenore, based on Bürger's famous gothic poem, the program invites the audience to discover a repertoire of extraordinary expressiveness, whose capacity to surprise and disturb remains intact.
