Imarhan bring the “Desert Blues” revolution to Portugal in October. The Algerian quintet presents the new album Essam at Casa da Música (Porto) and at Lisboa Ao Vivo. 19 OCTOBER, Room 2 of CASA DA MÚSICA, PORTO. 20 OCTOBER, Room 2 of LISBOA AO VIVO, LISBOA. Imarhan, spearheads of the new wave of Tuareg music, are preparing to return to Portugal in October for two concerts that promise to redraw the frontiers of desert sound. The band plays on 19 October at Casa da Música in Porto, heading to the capital the following day, 20 October, for a show at Lisboa Ao Vivo. Hailing from Tamanrasset, in southern Algeria, Imarhan have been, since 2006, the great renovators of assouf (desert blues). If names such as Tinariwen or Mdou Moctar popularised the genre, Imarhan decided to tear up the rulebook. Across three acclaimed records, they have fused ancestral poetry with funk, psychedelic rock and pan-African rhythms, collaborating with figures such as Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) or Kurt Vile. On this tour, the group presents their fourth and most ambitious studio work: “Essam” (meaning “lightning” in Tamasheq). Recorded at their own headquarters, Aboogi Studio, the album marks a turning point. For the first time, Imarhan move away from the absolute dominance of guitars to explore electronic landscapes and evocative productions. Produced in collaboration with Maxime Kosinetz and Emile Papandreou (of the synth-pop duo UTO), the record uses modular synthesizers to process traditional Tuareg percussion, such as the calabash and metal drums. The result is a sound that winks at cosmic folk-pop in “Derhan N’Oulhine” and aligns with the dancefloor vanguard in “Azaman Amoutay”. Sadam’s voice appears on Essam more stripped-back and confident than ever, also as a result of his recent collaboration with Damon Albarn on the Africa Express project. These concerts in Portugal will be a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of a band that refuses to be catalogued simply as “world music”. Imarhan prove that tradition and modernity are not opposites: they fuel each other.

A banda atua no dia 19 de Outubro na Casa da Música, no Porto, descendo à capital no dia seguinte, 20 de Outubro, para um espetáculo no Lisboa Ao Vivo. Naturais de Tamanrasset, no sul da Argélia, os Imarhan têm sido, desde 2006, os grandes renovadores do assouf (o blues do deserto). Se nomes como Tinariwen ou Mdou Moctar popularizaram o género, os Imarhan decidiram rasgar o livro de regras. Ao longo de três discos aclamados, fundiram a poesia ancestral com funk, rock psicadélico e ritmos pan-africanos, colaborando com figuras como Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) ou Kurt Vile. Nesta digressão, o grupo apresenta o seu quarto e mais ambicioso trabalho de estúdio: "Essam" (que significa "relâmpago" em Tamasheq). Gravado no seu próprio quartel-general, o Aboogi Studio, o álbum marca um ponto de viragem. Pela primeira vez, os Imarhan afastam-se do domínio absoluto das guitarras para explorar paisagens eletrónicas e produções evocativas. Produzido em colaboração com Maxime Kosinetz e Emile Papandreou (do duo synth-pop UTO), o disco utiliza sintetizadores modulares para processar percussões tradicionais tuaregues, como a calabaça e bidões de metal. O resultado é um som que tanto pisca o olho à folk-pop cósmica em "Derhan N’Oulhine", como se alinha com a vanguarda das pistas de dança em "Azaman Amoutay". A voz de Sadam surge em Essam mais despida e confiante do que nunca, fruto também da sua recente colaboração com Damon Albarn no projeto Africa Express. Estes concertos em Portugal serão uma oportunidade rara para testemunhar a evolução de uma banda que recusa ser catalogada apenas como "world music".
