Brief Introduction In 2026, 25 years have passed since Mónica Lapa died. A major driving force behind Portuguese contemporary dance, Mónica was also a tap dance teacher, founding member of the Portuguese Association for Dance, and founded with Albino Moura the Danças na Cidade festival, which she directed until her death, alongside Mark Deputter. Mónica was an artist with a promising vision, which combined with her urgency for questioning and inclusion through art, impressed a generation in dance in Portugal. A talented dancer who for several years was part of Clara Andermatt's creative path, with whom she also developed production work. Mónica began her dance career as a tap dancer at age 16. Later, she established herself in contemporary dance, creating with Francisco Camacho the duet Bimarginário, followed by the solo Despe-te e Nada. After a long hiatus, she resumed choreographic creation with what would be her last piece, Miss Liberty, which premiered in 1999. As director of Danças na Cidade, after initial contact with the Cape Verdean dance community in 1994, she embarked on a new project, Dançar o que é Nosso. Over four years, she developed the project to stimulate artistic exchange and collaboration between organizations and artists from Europe, Africa and Brazil. This show is the result of a desire that has been germinating in recent years in the creator Marta Lapa, her sister, reflecting on the importance and impact Mónica had on Portuguese Contemporary Dance from the 1990s onward. It is also the result of the realization that there are generations of dance performers and creators who do not know who Mónica Lapa was or are unaware of her aggregating, energizing and creative power, despite being heirs to her legacy. Synopsis What if Mónica hadn't died? Between theatre and dance, this show revisits the life, work and legacy of Mónica Lapa, a decisive figure in Portuguese contemporary dance. Based on her biography, the memories of those who crossed paths with her, and the possibilities opened by fiction, an encounter is built between the artist who existed and the one who could have continued creating. Dancer, choreographer, producer and driving force behind projects that brought together artists, geographies and communities, Mónica made dance a space for questioning, inclusion and transformation. On stage, bodies, words and gestures summon her journey and imagine interrupted futures: what works would she have created, what causes would she have embraced, what paths would she have opened? A creation by Marta Lapa, her sister, which is simultaneously an intimate gesture of memory and a collective interrogation about the permanence of an artist after death. We seek not only to remember who Mónica Lapa was, but to reactivate her aggregating, restless and visionary energy, returning it to new generations and to the present of Portuguese dance. Grande impulsionadora da dança contemporânea portuguesa, a Mónica foi também professora de sapateado, sócia fundadora da Associação Portuguesa Para a Dança e fundou com Albino Moura o festival Danças na Cidade que dirigiu, até à data da sua morte, ao lado de Mark Deputter. A Mónica era uma artista com uma visão promissora, que aliada à sua urgência pelo questionamento e inclusão pela arte, impressionou uma geração na dança em Portugal. Bailarina talentosa que integrou durante vários anos o percurso criativo de Clara Andermatt, com quem desenvolveu também o trabalho de produção. A Mónica começou a sua carreira na dança, como sapateadora, quando tinha 16 anos. Mais tarde, afirma-se na dança contemporânea, criando com Francisco Camacho o dueto Bimarginário , seguido do solo Despe-te e Nada . Depois de um longo intervalo, reiniciou a criação coreográfica, com a que seria a sua última peça Miss Liberty , que estreou em 1999. Como diretora do Danças na Cidade, depois de um primeiro contacto com a comunidade de dança caboverdiana em 1994, embarcou num projeto novo, Dançar o que é Nosso . Durante quatro anos, desenvolveu o projeto com o intuito de estimular o intercâmbio artístico e a colaboração entre organizações e artistas da Europa, África e Brasil. Fruto também da constatação de que há gerações de intérpretes e criadores de dança que não sabem quem foi Mónica Lapa e ou têm consciência do seu poder agregador, dinamizador e criador, sendo, no entanto, herdeiros do seu legado. Sinopse E se a Mónica não tivesse morrido? Entre o teatro e a dança, este espetáculo revisita a vida, a obra e o legado de Mónica Lapa, figura determinante da dança contemporânea portuguesa. A partir da sua biografia, das memórias de quem com ela se cruzou e das possibilidades abertas pela ficção, constrói-se um encontro entre a artista que existiu e aquela que poderia ter continuado a criar. Bailarina, coreógrafa, produtora e impulsionadora de projetos que aproximaram artistas, geografias e comunidades, Mónica fez da dança um espaço de questionamento, inclusão e transformação.
