Bach's Mass in B minor, BWV 232, is one of the composer's most monumental works, completed between 1749 and 1750. This Christmas concert invites audiences into Bach's world through rich choral textures and formal mastery.

The Mass in B minor, BWV 232, by J. S. Bach, constitutes one of the most colossal works of his musical output, being placed among his works of greatest grandeur and importance. Its structural scale places us before a musical monument that results from the labour of a lifetime. Bach, a composer skilful in reusing musical materials, completed this Mass in the final years of his life, between 1749 and 1750. To this end, he used previously composed musical materials, some of which had been performed earlier, dating back to the 20s and 30s, and others composed from scratch. The work therefore presents a confluence of styles and compositional techniques that the composer adopted throughout his life, making it a unique work, a synthesis of styles and contrasts, almost like a musical biography. The composition in Latin, rather than German, includes the Ordinary of the Mass, pointing to the possible contexts of its performance, which, moreover, remain a matter of discussion among specialists in the composer's output. The work invites us to enter Bach's world through the richness of the choral textures, the latent stylistic variety and an unequivocal formal mastery and command of writing for choir and orchestra. The Mass in B minor probably had its first complete performance in 1859 in Leipzig, more than a century after the composer's death.

A Missa em si menor , BWV 232, de J. S. Bach, constitui um dos trabalhos mais colossais da sua produção musical, sendo colocado entre as suas obras de maior grandiosidade e importância. A sua envergadura estrutural coloca-nos perante um monumento musical que resulta do labor de uma vida. Bach, compositor exímio no reaproveitamento de materiais musicais, completou esta missa nos derradeiros anos da sua vida, entre 1749 e 1750. Utilizou, para o efeito, materiais musicais previamente compostos, e alguns anteriormente executados, que remontam aos anos 20 e 30, e outros compostos de raiz. A obra apresenta, por isso, uma confluência de estilos e técnicas de composição que o compositor adotou ao longo da sua vida, tornando-a numa obra ímpar, uma síntese de estilos e contrastes, quase como uma biografia musical. A composição em latim, ao invés do alemão, inclui o ordinário da Missa, apontando para os possíveis contextos de apresentação da mesma que, de resto, permanecem motivo de discussão entre os especialistas na produção do compositor. A obra convida-nos a entrar no mundo bachiano através da riqueza das texturas corais, da variedade estilística latente e de uma inequívoca mestria formal e do domínio da escrita para coro e orquestra. A Missa em si menor teve, provavelmente, a sua primeira audição integral em 1859, em Leipzig, mais de um século volvido da morte do compositor.
