Noémia Delgado, Cinema in the Singular

Noémia Delgado, Cinema in the Singular

Noémia Delgado, o cinema no singular

Cinema

Saturday 3 October · until 14 Oct

Cinemateca Portuguesa Santo António · Lisbon

Cinemateca Portuguesa dedicates a retrospective to Noémia Delgado (1933-2016), a filmmaker with a brief but fundamental body of work, who moved between ethnographic cinema and the various arts.

Noémia Delgado (1933-2016), to whom we now dedicate a short but fundamental retrospective, is the author of a little-known body of work that deserves to be rediscovered. Short, because short her work is: she managed to direct only a few films, among the many projects she left written, and most of her (completed) filmography consists of titles made for television. (…). In parallel with a 'revolutionary cinema', which emerged in April 1974 associated with the urgency of recording the present, in the same period a whole nucleus of films of ethnographic character emerged, questioning the mythical and symbolic roots of the Portuguese imagination. A very expressive movement in the film production of the time, which relates to the work developed by the Centro Português de Cinema, the cooperative of which Noémia was a member and from which she broke away, and in which a film such as MÁSCARAS stands out for its unusual sensitivity. (…). If Noémia Delgado's cinema is 'conjugated in the singular' here, it is also because of the way in which, meeting resistance in affirming her practice as a filmmaker, she moved over the years between the various arts — cinema, sculpture, painting, drawing and writing — which feed one another. Cinemateca Portuguesa. Programme here. Noémia Delgado retrospective.
