A walking tour starting at the Museum of Lisbon – Santo António that traces the remains of the city destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, reflecting on the different readings of the catastrophe, from divine punishment to rebirth.
Brief Introduction On 1 November 1755, Lisbon shook, burned and almost disappeared. Churches collapsed, others withstood the quake, and some were lost forever. On this tour, starting at the Museum of Lisbon – Santo António, we follow the traces of that vanished city, tracking the marks left by one of the most devastating events in Lisbon's history. Among ruins, reconstructions and memories, stories of faith, fear and resistance intertwine. At a time when many interpreted the catastrophe as divine punishment, this tour invites reflection on the different readings of the disaster and the profound transformations it brought about in the city and in mentalities, not only in Portugal but across much of Europe. More than a historical itinerary, it is a journey through the Lisbon that once was and the one that rose from the ashes. A walk between faith, destruction and rebirth. Prices Entry - 7€
