A futurist fiction series in which Chloé Azzopardi explores other forms of cohabitation with the living world, creating non-technological devices from natural elements and organic cyborgs that imagine alternatives to technical progress.
This series is a futurist fiction in which the artist explores other forms of cohabitation with the living world and opens paths of reflection on what an iconography of ecological self-defence might be. The non-technological devices are composite tools made from natural elements collected and assembled with threads to imitate the technological devices that populate our daily lives. Between rudimentary productions and science-fiction creations, these objects are both extensions of the body and hindrances. Associated with invented artefacts, they create a fictional universe that works as a mirror of our fantasies about the 'future'. With this project, the artist wishes to create other desires, to generate images that can serve as a resource for our imaginations. Faced with our dreams of a hyper-artificialised world, how can we rethink the notion of progress? How can we make it serve the common good instead of feeding a race for technical progress motivated solely by progress itself? Trying to go beyond not only a naive nostalgia for a 'return to nature' but also the blind optimism of technological solutionism, the artist seeks narratives that can help us combat our political discouragement and act in the face of environmental destruction. Through fiction and play, she imagines alternative ways of conceiving augmented lives, creating organic cyborgs whose aim is to inscribe human presence in the environment in an alternative way.
