Themed walking tours that take residents and visitors on a discovery of Lisbon — from the history of the municipality to Campo de Ourique, the places of the Inquisition, the palaces and convents of the Barbadinhos and Roman Lisbon — with routes devised and led on foot by city technicians.

The Lisbon Itineraries take residents and visitors on a discovery of the city. Built around a variety of themes, they explore the city's everyday life, its built and literary heritage, its streets and urban landscapes. Each theme is prepared and led by technicians from the municipality, who design the route and walk it on foot. Programme: 9 October: 10h. HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF LISBON. Elevated to the status of municipality in Roman times, Lisbon was governed from the alcáçova of the Castle by the Moorish alcaide. It received its charter in 1179, during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques. Municipal government took place in the forecourt of the Sé cathedral, moving in the 14th century to meetings beside the Church of Santo António. This arrangement lasted until the ecclesiastical division of the city in the 18th century. Between 1717 and 1741 a second City Hall operated next to the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos. After the 1755 earthquake, a new building was designed for the Paços do Concelho, on the site where it still stands today. 13, 29 October, 10 November: 10h. THE CAMPO DE OURIQUE NEIGHBOURHOOD. Before the great earthquake of 1755, the area where the Campo de Ourique neighbourhood would rise was a vast plateau. Immediately after the quake, it became a sought-after refuge for many who had been left homeless. An itinerary starting from the Church of Santo Condestável, showing the heritage, streets, shops and gardens of Campo de Ourique. 13 October, 17, 27 November: 10h. THE PLACES OF THE INQUISITION. In 1536, in the reign of D. João III, the Inquisition and the Tribunal of the Holy Office were established in Portugal. In this court, which operated until 1821, the heresies that threatened the Catholic Church were judged. In Lisbon, its headquarters were located in the Rossio, in the former Estaus palace, near the site where the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II now stands. The Rossio was also the stage for various autos-da-fé, public ceremonies of punishment of those condemned by the Inquisition. In this itinerary we walk through some of the places connected with this institution, from the Rossio to Praça do Comércio. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 October: 10h. PALACES AND CONVENTS OF THE BARBADINHOS. The bearded monks of the Order of the Friars Minor Capuchin of the Province of Calcedonia, who settled here in the 17th century, left their mark on this eastern part of the city. The convent of the Italian Barbadinhos, founded at the initiative of the Portuguese crown to house foreign friars, is the landmark of the neighbourhood. In its grounds the Estação Elevatória das Águas was built at the end of the 19th century, which today houses the Water Museum. The neighbourhood is also marked by discreet palaces, many of them houses of former 18th-century noble estates that served as retreats for aristocratic families. 15 October, 12 November: 10h. ROMAN LISBON. Discover fascinating Roman Lisbon through a cultural walking route that reveals the remains of ancient Olisipo, a flourishing city of the Roman Empire. The route passes emblematic sites such as the ruins of the Roman Theatre and the religious, thermal and industrial zone. Along the way, you can learn about the daily life, engineering and rituals of the Romans who inhabited the hill by the Tagus. A journey on foot through underground, historic Lisbon, where the past emerges discreetly in the heart of the modern city. 16 October: 10h. OLD OLIVAIS. A zone of very ancient occupation, with prehistoric and Roman...
