The main characteristic of this type of dance is the rhythmic movement of the hips and abdominal muscles. It consists of a series of movements of vibrations, accents, undulations, pelvic movements and rotations, which work the body as a whole. Combined with music and a sinuosity similar to that of a serpent, these movements were originally an integral part of the fertility ritual and preparation for motherhood. Oriental dance promotes socialization, self-esteem, sensuality, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, body awareness and balance. Above all, it allows us to discover that it is possible to have fun dancing, releasing and controlling the body at the same time. The physical and emotional benefits of Oriental Dance make it a true therapy for body and mind. PROGRAM Day 1 | Alignment In Oriental Dance the body is aligned vertically between earth and sky. The earth, symbol of reality, truly of the ground we walk on, is also our body; the sky, symbol of the Divine. Our body is a channel connected between earth and sky. Day 2 | The undulations The undulations are movements that, as the name indicates, are circular: circles, eights, spirals, infinities. Our body draws movements of the world and of life, making the water within us move and bringing physical health and emotional balance. Day 3 | The accents The accents are strong movements, with energy, danced to the sound of rhythm and the beating of the heart. Day 4 | Shimmies Shimmies are vibrations that make the blood circulate, warm the body and tremble in connection with the movement of the world. Everything moves all the time, nothing is still. TESTIMONIALS FROM THE ORIENTAL DANCE STUDENTS OF THE MUSEU DO ORIENTE When I dance I am surprised by the strength that is born in me. Oriental Dance is lightness - it takes us beyond ourselves. Oriental Dance awakens the GODDESS within me! Could there be anything more POWERFUL than that? It is more than a dance, it is pure MAGIC! ?
Oriental Dance classes bring me many things: they help me stretch my back and breathe deeply, to take my mind off any worries I may have, and they give me a community with whom I can share the sensations and emotions brought by the dance. Oriental Dance is much more than the imaginary setting of the One Thousand and One Nights, populated by women with bare midriffs and faces covered by a veil. It is a process in which the body is always evolving in the mastery of technique and movement. At the same time, Oriental Dance opens a space within us, so that each dancer may meet her deepest and dormant feminine root. And that is why it is important to dance! COURSE FORMAT The course will take place simultaneously in person, at the Museu do Oriente premises, and in an online version. The online version is broadcast in real time and live. To access it, the participant only needs a mobile phone, tablet or computer with a good internet connection. Each participant will receive a link and password so they can join the course. As it is a live course, participants must necessarily be connected on the respective day and time in order to take part. A dança oriental promove a sociabilização, a autoestima, a sensualidade, a força, a resistência, a flexibilidade, a coordenação, a consciência corporal e o equilíbrio.
Dia 2 | As ondulações
Dia 3 | As acentuações
