The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the chorus of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos perform Georges Bizet's 'Carmen', sung in French with Portuguese surtitles, in a staging by Francisco López with musical direction by Antonio Pirolli.

Full details

Synopsis Pre-concert talk with Bárbara Villalobos, 30 min. before each performance. In French, surtitled in Portuguese. Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Soon after its publication in 1845, Carmen, Prosper Mérimée's novella, was labelled shocking and scandalous. Thirty years later, Georges Bizet premiered 'his' Carmen in Paris; since then, it has become one of the most frequently staged operas in the world. The story of the gypsy who does not hesitate to die in the name of freedom and love remains one of the most impressive and enduring contemporary myths about the mysterious nature of Woman. Over the years, Carmen, revisited by countless directors, has gained new facets and interpretations. Yet the essential element remains: Carmen, the fatal anti-heroine, stays the inflexible centre of all versions. Show original (Portuguese)
