A show based on Sophocles' Ajax, probably his oldest tragedy, crossing the text with testimonies, narratives and artistic interventions in a reflection on the limits of power and the totalitarian threats of our time.
Full details Aïas, or Ájax Telemônio, or simply Ájax the Great, was, at the end of the Trojan War, considered the second best Greek warrior, behind only Achilles. With the failed attempt to murder Ulysses and his army, Ájax falls into disgrace and takes his own life. But his half-brother Teucer, despite the dishonour of the suicide and the opposition of Agamemnon and Menelaus, decides to pay him the honours due to him.
Who, like Ájax, driven by primary instincts such as the impulse for revenge over an injustice, has not been a victim of illusions caused by their own frailties, by the intervention of others, or by an event or a particular social context? The information age — or rather, the age of the discrediting of information — and the fog that so often surrounds its sources is, today, the ideal context for the development and propagation of political discourses, social measures and ideologies that are cruel, unjust, anti-democratic and regressive. Thus, little by little, the path is traced towards the total eclipse of the universal declaration of human rights and of human dignity and the rights of all sentient living entities, and so profoundly inhumane acts are permitted, normalised and disseminated globally. How do we face this era, this time, this threat of the complete and abysmal degradation of our civilisational values? We live under constant attacks on democracy and civilisational progress. The absence of dialogue, extremism and the deafening noise of our time gain strength and perpetrate their attack through the weakening of thought and, consequently, of discernment. Restrictions on freedom of expression, disinformation — or its manipulation — and its political and economic exploitation undermine the heart of democracy. What to do in the face of the social madness installed, in the face of the social hysteria manifested in consumerism and unchecked speed? Sophocles' Ájax is a reflection on the limits of power and is also, it seems to us, an answer to totalitarian and totalising threats.
An answer that comes from the depths of our civilisation and from the cradle of democracy. Starting from the text of Ájax, probably the oldest of Sophocles' tragedies, this show makes a theatrical approach to the text and to the figure of Sophocles, crossing them with testimonies, narratives and artistic interventions in order to create an original and sharp-edged object. What we set out to do, in the context we live in, is to present a profoundly human theatre that returns our gaze. A theatre eye to eye.
Show original (Portuguese) Aïas ou Ájax Telemônio ou, simplesmente, Ájax, o Grande, era no fim da guerra de Tróia, tido como o segundo melhor guerreiro grego, apenas atrás de Aquiles. Com a tentativa gorada de assassinar Ulisses, e o seu exército, Ájax cai em desgraça e suicida-se. Mas o seu meio-irmão, Teucro, apesar da desonra do suicídio e da oposição de Ágamemnon e Menelau, decide prestar-lhe as honras devidas. Quem, como Ájax, levado por instintos primários como o ímpeto de vingança por uma injustiça, não foi vítima de ilusões causadas seja pelas suas próprias fragilidades, por intervenção de outros ou por um acontecimento ou um determinado contexto social? A era da informação ou, melhor, da descredibilização da informação e a névoa que tantas vezes envolve as suas fontes é, hoje, o contexto ideal, para o desenvolvimento e propagação de discursos políticos, medidas sociais e ideologias cruéis, injustas, anti-democráticas e regressivas. Assim, desenha-se a pouco e pouco o caminho para o total eclipse da declaração universal dos direitos humanos e da dignidade humana e dos direitos de todas as entidades vivas sencientes e, assim, se permitem, vulgarizam e disseminam globalmente actos profundamente desumanos. Como enfrentar esta era, este tempo, esta ameaça à degradação completa e abismal dos nossos valores civilizacionais? Vivemos, pois, constantes ataques à democracia e à evolução civilizacional. A ausência de diálogo, os extremismos e o ruído ensurdecedor do nosso tempo ganham força e perpetram o seu ataque através da fragilização do pensamento e, consequentemente, do discernimento. As limitações à liberdade de expressão, a desinformação, ou a sua manipulação, e o seu aproveitamento político e económico minam o coração da democracia. Que fazer perante a demência social instalada, perante o histerismo social manifestado no consumismo e na velocidade desenfreada? Ájax de Sófocles é uma reflexão sobre os limites do poder e é também, parece-nos, uma resposta às ameaças totalitárias e totalizantes. Uma resposta que vem do fundo da nossa civilização e do berço da democracia. Partindo do texto de Ájax , provavelmente a mais antiga tragédia de Sófocles, este espectáculo faz uma aproximação teatral ao texto e à figura de Sófocles, cruzando-os com depoimentos, narrativas e intervenções artísticas no sentido de criar um objecto original e acutilante. O que nos propomos, perante o contexto que vivemos, é a apresentação de um teatro profundamente humano e que nos retribua o olhar. Um teatro olhos nos olhos.
