Traditionally, mizuhiki is used to decorate gift wrappings and envelopes offered on special occasions such as births, weddings or funerals. The color combinations and number of cords have different meanings, in a code understood by both giver and receiver. With secular roots, mizuhiki remains popular in Japan today and has conquered the West as a technique for creating accessories and decorative pieces. Tradicionalmente, o mizuhiki é usado para decorar embrulhos de presentes e envelopes oferecidos em ocasiões especiais, como nascimentos, casamentos ou funerais. As combinações de cores e quantidade de fios possuem diferentes significados, num código que é entendido por quem oferece e por quem recebe. Com raízes seculares, na actualidade o mizuhiki mantem-se popular no Japão e conquistou o Ocidente como técnica para criar acessórios e peças decorativas.
