Commented concert by Susana Henriques. Lisbon Music Academy. Between Samurai and Violins proposes a musical journey inspired by the life and thought of Shinichi Suzuki, a major figure in 20th-century music pedagogy. Born into a lineage of samurai and a member of the family that owned the world's largest instrument factory, his path was marked by a late discovery of the violin, by his time in Berlin, by his friendship with Einstein and by the formulation of the 'mother tongue' principle. This concert celebrates a legacy that combines discipline, listening and affection, revealing music as a language of formation, sharing and growth. Between tradition and innovation, this concert promotes an immersive experience, capable of transforming performers and audiences on both sides of the stage.

Synopsis Pre-concert talk by Dinis Sousa at 4:30 PM. Accessibility: Session with audio description. Orquestra XXI and the Lisboa Cantat Choir present Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, in the year marking the bicentenary of the composer's death. Premiered in 1824, the work marked the history of Western music by integrating, in its final movement, soloists and choir on verses from Friedrich Schiller's Ode to Joy. Beethoven thus gives musical form to an aspiration of fraternity among peoples that remains associated with the reception of the symphony. The program also includes the national premiere of Ambra, by Norwegian composer Kristine Tjøgersen, conceived as a tribute to Beethoven's work. Known for a language that crosses sound, nature and imagination, Tjøgersen proposes a contemporary response to the composer's influence. Placed in dialogue, the two works bring together different times and languages, revealing Beethoven's permanence in today's musical creation.
