Shostakovich composed a total of 15 symphonies, some truly monumental in scale. His prolific musical output inevitably intertwines with the historical context of the Soviet Union and the moments of tension that preceded the composition of this work. In 1948, he was censored, along with other Soviet composers, for writing music considered 'formalist', which placed him in a delicate situation. Although there is debate about the work's genesis, the composer is thought to have embraced the idea of composing this symphony in 1953, after the death of Joseph Stalin in March of that year, albeit without an explicit programme. The work, while not a direct reference to the event, does suggest it in an unusual way. However, as in other works by the composer, the references also indicate a rich inner world, unconnected to a specific programme, ranging through dark moments and other emotional and intense ones. The four movements have a marked character, with distinct features that allow Shostakovich to explore different musical references, such as the DSCH theme associated with his name, present in several movements and giving a sense of unity to the work. The premiere took place on 17 December 1953 in Leningrad, performed by the city's Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Evgeny Mravinsky.

Chostakovitch compôs um total de 15 sinfonias, algumas de dimensão verdadeiramente monumental. A sua fecunda produção musical cruza-se, de forma inevitável, com o contexto histórico da União Soviética e com os momentos de tensão que antecedem a composição desta obra. Em 1948, foi censurado, com outros compositores soviéticos, por escrever música considerada «formalista», o que o colocaria numa situação delicada. Ainda que existam debates sobre a génese da obra, o compositor terá abraçado a ideia de compor esta sinfonia em 1953, após a morte de Josef Stalin em março daquele ano, embora sem um programa explícito. A obra, não sendo uma referência direta ao acontecimento, não deixa de o sugerir de forma algo inusitada. No entanto, como noutras obras do compositor, as referências indicam também um mundo interior de grande riqueza, sem ligação a um programa específico, passando por momentos sombrios e outros emocionais e intensos. Os quatro andamentos apresentam um carácter vincado, com características distintas que permitem a Chostakovitch explorar diferentes referências musicais, como o tema DSCH associado ao seu nome, presente em vários andamentos e conferindo um sentido de unidade à obra. A estreia teve lugar a 17 de dezembro de 1953, em Leninegrado, pela Orquestra Filarmónica daquela cidade, sob a direção de Evgeni Mravinski.
