Synopsis If you wish to attend all the sessions in this cycle, you can purchase the pack for the 7 sessions here. 7 Figures in the Renewal of Portuguese Popular Music (1958-1979) by David Ferreira Even though their first records would only be released in the first half of the following decade, a 'New Portuguese Song' was born in the hope kindled by Humberto Delgado's campaign in 1958. New directions, revealed by the courage and invention of José Afonso (1929, 1987), were explored in diverse and highly personal ways by a generation of younger singer-songwriters born between 1942 and 1948. From the new Coimbra ballad to the inevitable impact of Anglo-Saxon novelties, there was a rediscovery of traditional music from here and from the old Portuguese colonies, in songs in which the word and the will to change were central. Novos rumos, revelados pela coragem e invenção de José Afonso (1929, 1987), foram explorados de formas diversas e muito personalizados por uma geração de cantautores mais novos, nascidos entre 1942 e 1948. Da nova Balada de Coimbra até ao inevitável impacto das novidades anglo-saxónicas, assistiu-se à redescoberta da música tradicional de cá e das antigas colónias portuguesas, em canções onde foram centrais a palavra e a vontade de mudar.
