Synopsis Pre-concert talk at 7:30 PM. Requiems by Victoria and Duarte Lobo La Grande Chapelle Tomás Luis de Victoria's Officium Defunctorum (1548, 1611) is considered one of the culminating works of the European Renaissance and a major expression of Spanish musical mysticism. Composed for the funeral of Empress Maria of Austria at the Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid, the cycle follows the main moments of the funeral rite, from the matins of the vigil to the requiem mass and final absolution, still surprising today for the expressive intensity achieved through extraordinary sobriety. The second part of the program places this work in dialogue with the eight-voice Missa pro defunctis by Duarte Lobo (c. 1565, 1646), a central figure of early 17th-century Portuguese sacred polyphony. Published in Antwerp in 1621, Lobo's Requiem reveals the continuity of the Iberian polyphonic tradition, developing a broad and solemn writing closely linked to the plainchant of the Office of the Dead, marked by a balance between luminous homophony and restrained counterpoint. Requiems de Victoria e Duarte Lobo La Grande Chapelle O Officium Defunctorum de Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548, 1611) é considerado uma das obras culminantes do Renascimento europeu e uma expressão maior do misticismo musical espanhol. Composto para as exéquias da imperatriz Maria de Áustria, no mosteiro de Las Descalzas Reales, em Madrid, o ciclo acompanha os principais momentos do rito fúnebre, das matinas da vigília à missa de réquiem e absolvição final, surpreendendo ainda hoje pela intensidade expressiva alcançada através de extraordinária sobriedade. A segunda parte do programa coloca esta obra em diálogo com a Missa pro defunctis a oito vozes de Duarte Lobo (c. 1565, 1646), figura central da polifonia sacra portuguesa do início do século XVII.
