Boston trio Horse Jumper of Love bring the slowcore of their 2024 album 'Disaster Trick' to Lisbon, on a bill with local alternative rock band Digital Device, who explore the space between melody and dissonance.

Full details

Brief Introduction Horse Jumper of Love Stuff of dreams. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear Horse Jumper Of Love for the first time goes something like that. That's how it was with their debut, the self-titled album that this year celebrated ten years. The songs carried the dreamlike and pondered shoegaze along unusual paths, recalling John Maus or Joy Division here and there, with surprising gestures. The Boston trio hasn't stopped since then. Classic line-up, guitar, bass, drums, in the hands of Dimitri Giannopoulos, John Margaris and Jamie Vadala-Doran. The latest album, from 2024, 'Disaster Trick' perfects the recipe. Somewhat unexpectedly, more discreet, slowcore. Horse Jumper Of Love live on their skin this kind of renewal of 1990s indie that has been happening for about a decade, without having been fully confirmed. It is not a replication, or homage, but rather recognising that that sound served a state. The search for a sound, as an idea, allowed various paths for those who wanted to pick up just a guitar, bass and drums. One can trust this through the path of renewal as tradition, following the clues of traditional music. Perhaps it is even a way for pop/rock music to want to present itself as traditional. This search has led to songs that are listened to with today's thinking. Dimitri Giannopoulos, the band's vocalist, explores these points in his lyrics, combining a Low/Red House Painters presence with the urgency that the times demand, because it is one of greater dissatisfaction. And it is through there that one thinks of John Maus and Joy Division: a viable, justifiable path that serves them very well. In the dreams of Horse Jumper Of Love one looks up at the sky. One looks up at the sky hoping that up there there exists an idea of no limit, providing the only satisfying answer for today. Dimitri leaves ideas suspended, both in his writing and in the way he carries his voice, releasing it, at times, into the air, as if that idea had no end, that dream could not end, or that the end does not have to be determined by the idea of an end. A somewhat romantic, even tragic, idea of a musician who seems unwilling to look at what awaits him. It is fascinating that there is still courage for that.

Show original (Portuguese)

Breve Introdução Horse Jumper of Love Matéria de sonhos.
