Brief Introduction RELIGION IN INDIA With Manuel Sanches DATE | Saturday | 14 November HOURS | 10.00 to 13.00 PARTICIPANTS | Min. 8, Max. 20 PRICE | €30 The Indian subcontinent has been, since the beginning of Human History, the cradle of a rich, vast and diverse range of religious and spiritual traditions. In contemporary times, this region of Asia is still one of the most diverse in the world, regarding religion. The main objective of this session is to introduce participants to the teachings, practices and traditions of three of the most important religions of Indian origin: - Jainism, an ascetic-based religion with very ancient roots - Hinduism, the diverse set of religious traditions that sustains the heart of Indian culture - And Sikhism, a monotheistic religion that emerged in the 15th century and quickly became one of the religions with the most followers in India Manuel Sanches completed a master's degree in History and Culture of Religions at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon in 2023, dedicating himself to the study of Buddhism in its various traditions. The central theme of his final dissertation was the Bardo Thodol - a work known as "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" in the West - and how some of its contents are similar to contemporary descriptions of altered states of consciousness. During the master's degree, he studied Pali, the language of one of the main Buddhist canons, central to the Theravada tradition, through courses at the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies. His main interest in the Buddhist tradition is its theoretical-practical approach to the study of mind and consciousness. In addition to these academic studies, he has dedicated himself to the study of Buddhist teachings and meditation on a personal level, mainly according to the Theravada tradition. Breve Introdução A RELIGIÃO NA CHINA Com Manuel Sanches DATA | Sábado | 14 Novembro HORAS | 10.00 às 13.00 PARTICIPANTES | Mín. 8, Máx. 20 PREÇO | €30 O subcontinente indiano foi, desde o início da História da Humanidade, o berço de um rico, vasto e diverso leque de tradições religiosas e espirituais. Na contemporaneidade, esta região da Ásia é ainda uma das diversas do mundo, no que toca à religião. O objetivo principal desta sessão é dar a conhecer aos participantes os ensinamentos, práticas e tradições de três das mais importantes religiões de origem indiana: - O jainismo, religião de base ascética com raízes muito antigas - O hinduísmo, o conjunto diverso de tradições religiosas que sustenta o coração da cultura indiana - E o sikhismo, uma religião monoteísta que surgiu no século XV e rapidamente se tornou uma das religiões com mais seguidores na Índia Manuel Sanches completou mestrado em História e Cultura das Religiões na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa em 2023, dedicando-se ao estudo do budismo nas suas várias tradições. O tema central da sua dissertação final foi o Bardo Thodol - uma obra conhecida por "O Livro Tibetano dos Mortos" no Ocidente - e a forma como alguns dos seus conteúdos são semelhantes a descrições contemporâneas de estados alterados de consciência. Durante o mestrado estudou pali, a língua de um dos principais cânones budistas, central na tradição Theravada, através dos cursos do Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies. O seu interesse principal na tradição budista é a sua abordagem teórico-prática ao estudo da mente e da consciência. Para além destes estudos em contexto académico, tem-se dedicado ao estudo dos ensinamentos e meditação budistas a um nível pessoal e principalmente segundo a tradição Theravada.
