What if, in a single program, one could map the creative effervescence of early modernism, its boundary-breaking, its interartistic dialogues, and its relentless search for a new musical language? The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Joseph Swensen, presents key works of French modernism centered around a Portuguese voice shaped by the same currents. Opening the concert, Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), a landmark in music history born from Mallarmé's symbolist poetry. By dissolving the boundaries between rhythms, harmony and orchestral color, this work introduced a new conception of musical time, in which atmosphere supersedes argument and the sinuous theme of the flute drifts adrift, like consciousness itself. Luís de Freitas Branco's Violin Concerto (1916), here performed by Carlos Damas (soloist of the work's Parisian premiere), constitutes a singular achievement in Portuguese music. Based on modal exploration and cyclical forms closer to César Franck than to Impressionism, it reveals a composer navigating between the heritage of the past and an unmistakably personal harmonic voice, decades ahead of its wider recognition. Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899), a meditation on a Renaissance court dance, brings stillness and luminous orchestral restraint to the program. Closing the evening, Debussy's ambitious La mer (1905): three symphonic sketches in which the sea becomes an inexhaustible source of color, movement and emotional depth; a work in infinite renewal, like the tides it evokes. Four works, three composers, but a shared conviction: that music, when free from convention, becomes something close to nature itself.

E se, num único programa, se pudesse mapear a efervescência criativa do modernismo inicial, o seu galgar de limites, os seus diálogos interartísticos e a sua busca incansável por uma nova linguagem musical? A Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, sob a batuta de Joseph Swensen, apresenta obras-chave do modernismo francês em torno de uma voz portuguesa moldada pelas mesmas correntes. A abrir o concerto, o Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (1894) de Debussy, um marco da história da música gerado a partir da poesia simbolista de Mallarmé. Ao dissolver as fronteiras entre ritmos, harmonia e cor orquestral, esta obra introduziu uma nova conceção de tempo musical, na qual a atmosfera suplanta o argumento e o tema sinuoso da flauta flutua à deriva, como a própria consciência. O Concerto para violino e orquestra (1916) de Luís de Freitas Branco, aqui interpretado por Carlos Damas (solista da estreia parisiense da obra), constitui um feito singular na música portuguesa. Baseando-se na exploração modal e de formas cíclicas mais próximas de César Franck do que do Impressionismo, revela um compositor a navegar entre a herança do passado e uma voz harmónica inequivocamente pessoal, décadas à frente do seu reconhecimento mais amplo. A Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899) de Ravel, uma meditação sobre uma dança de corte renascentista, traz quietude e luminosa contenção orquestral ao programa. A fechar o serão, o ambicioso La mer (1905) de Debussy: três esquissos sinfónicos nos quais o mar se converte em fonte inesgotável de cor, movimento e profundidade emocional; uma obra em infinita renovação, como as marés que evoca. Quatro obras, três compositores, mas uma convicção partilhada: a de que a música, quando livre de convenções, se torna algo próximo da própria natureza.
