Kali Flanagan, now performing as Superfan, brings his indie-rock project to Lisbon for a live show showcasing his new album.

Prodigy? Kali Flanagan started making music at age 11. At 15 he signed a record deal. For years he performed simply as Kali and was a darling of the teenage population, making songs that resonated, and still resonate, of course, with his age and were also a gateway to a semi-mature indie-rock that we all seek at a certain age. In 2024, despite opening for The Strokes and Weyes Blood, he still worked at a record store in Los Angeles. Almost a cliché of other times, but one that not only suits him but is completely justified. Kali Flanagan is still very young. It was also in 2024 that he decided to change his name, rebranding as Superfan, a change that accompanied Tow Truck Jesus, which gave him another dimension. My Piledriver Heart will be the second chapter of this mission. What changed? First, the voice. It may seem strange to go down this path, but over the years one thing that has changed in Kali is his voice, pains of starting very young, but also of discovering it, how it fits into his music and how it can evolve with him in this process. Contrary to appearances, it is an advantage, a musician growing with his songs and us, on this side, growing with him and with them, the songs. Even if we have already grown too much, it is never too much to grow, especially with melodies and words that seem to be discovering a way to exist in the current indie-rock scene. Some tracks from My Piledriver Heart were already known, like the beautiful "Aperion (Fantasy Football)", released about a year ago, which was already a strong indicator of the change to come: compositions decked out with arrangements, with a greater shadow, not necessarily dark, but something heavier, as if covering the voice a little was a desire, a gesture between shyness and stylistic choice. Kali murmurs a lot, which is not new, but his voice on My Piledriver Heart is heard as a continuous lament, one that does not get stuck in dead ends and moves on, in carousel mode, in search of a mirage of happiness. "Joy" ends the album and it is no coincidence. It is another step in this maturation process. Kali Flanagan as Superfan is not yet a mature musician, but he is a formed musician. The search for his voice, today, is a process, a luxury he can afford because he sees himself as ahead of others. Not out of arrogance, but out of advantage. Durante anos apresentou-se apenas como Kali e era um queridinho junto de uma população adolescente, fazia canções que ressoavam , e ainda ressoam, claro , com a sua idade e eram também uma porta de entrada para um indie-rock semiamadurecido que todos procuramos numa certa idade. Em 2024, apesar de andar a abrir para o Strokes e Weyes Blood, ainda mantinha um trabalho numa loja de discos em Los Angeles. Quase cliché de outros tempos, mas um que não só lhe fica bem como é completamente justificado. Kali Flanagan ainda é muito novo. Foi também em 2024 que decidiu mudar de nome, assumir-se como Superfan, mudança que acompanhou Tow Truck Jesus , que lhe deu outra dimensão. My Piledriver Heart será o segundo capítulo dessa missão. O que mudou? Para já a voz. Parece estranho ir por esse caminho, mas ao longo destes anos uma coisa que tem mudado em Kali é a voz, dores de se começar muito novo, mas também de a descobrir, de como encaixa na sua música e de como pode evoluir com ele, neste processo. É, ao contrário do que possa parecer, uma vantagem, um músico a crescer com as suas canções e nós, deste lado, a crescer com ele e com elas, as canções. Mesmo que já tenhamos crescido demais, nunca é demais crescer, sobretudo com melodias e palavras que parecem estar a descobrir uma forma de existir no cenário indie-rock actual. Já se conheciam algumas delas de My Piledriver Heart , como a belíssima “Aperion (Fantasy Football)”, editada há cerca de um ano, que já era um grande indicador da mudança que aí vinha: composições revestidas de arranjos, com uma maior sombra, não necessariamente negra, mas algo mais pesado, como se encobrir um pouco a voz fosse um desejo, num gesto entre timidez e escolha estilística. Kali murmura muito, o que não é novo, mas a sua voz em My Piledriver Heart ouve-se como um contínuo lamento, um que não encalha em becos e segue em frente, em modo carrossel, à procura de uma miragem de felicidade. “Joy” termina o álbum e não é um acaso. É mais um passo neste processo de amadurecimento. Kali Flanagan como Superfan ainda não é músico maduro, mas é um músico formado. A procura da sua voz, hoje, é um processo, um luxo a que se pode dar porque encara-se como estando à frente dos outros. Não por arrogância, mas por vantagem.
