Centro Cultural de Belém Belém · Lisbon

New Year's Concert by the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa under the musical direction of Pablo Urbina, with a programme of waltzes, polkas and overtures by Strauss and others. A pre-concert talk precedes each session.

Full details

Synopsis On the occasion of the New Year, Fernando Pessoa wrote a poem stating that it is a “fiction that something begins!” and that, like a river, it “only begins in thought.” So let it be in thought and, preferably, inspired by good music. In its most virtuosic expression, however old it may be, music has the power to transform us whenever we give it importance. Whether waltzes or polkas... it opens us to reflection, but also to change. It adds something different to time, which never stops and is always new. The charm of facing another 365 days lies in their not yet being History, as if they were 365 blank bars. Happy 2027! PROGRAMME Johann Strauss II (1825, 1899) Overture to the operetta Die Fledermaus, Op. 367~ Johann Strauss II Wine, Women and Song, Op. 333 Gerónimo Giménez (1854, 1923) Intermezzo from the zarzuela La boda de Luis Alonso Johann Strauss II Flaming Polka, Op. 271 Ruperto Chapí (1851, 1909) Overture to the zarzuela El tambor de granaderos Émile Waldteufel (1837, 1915) The Skaters, Op. 183 Johann Strauss II French Polka In the Krapfen Forest, Op. 336 Johann Strauss II Waltz Rejoice in Life, Op. 340 Johann Strauss II Waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube, Op. 314 ARTISTIC TEAM Musical Direction Pablo Urbina Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa Co-production Centro Cultural de Belém, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa Pre-concert talk by Rui Campos Leitão at 10h30 and 16h30. Show original (Portuguese)

Feliz 2027!
