In the exhibition Contra Vento e Maré, Andrea de Luigi shows paintings in which figures unfold in movement, built from layers held in tension — work produced between 2024 and 2026 alongside her participation in the 61st Venice Biennale. On view Tuesday to Saturday, 11h to 19h.
Along the room, a figure unfolds repeatedly on the same surface. In the work "Contra Vento e Maré", which gives the exhibition its title, women advance together, crossed by bands that suggest wind, water and paint. The title describes a process: each work is built against its own stability. De Luigi accumulates visible, overlapping layers in tension. Unlike nineteenth-century chronophotography and futurism, focused on mechanics, De Luigi retains the emotional residue of movement: the figures suffer, celebrate and resist displacement. Birds fused with heads or in flight introduce another velocity onto the canvas. Dense vegetation works as background and skin; in works such as A Pele da Floresta and Habitar o Profundo, body and landscape merge. The artist's previous career in clinical psychology is reflected in the work as a way of looking: an interest in gesture as symptom. Produced between 2024 and 2026, parallel to her participation in the 61st Venice Biennale (Personal Structures). In Contra vento e marés, Andrea De Luigi's figures never reach any visible destination. Their conquest is not the arrival: it is having sustained the crossing. Vanesa Catellani.
