🎤 Prokofiev and Shostakovich return to Gulbenkian with Yeol Eum Son The South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son performs Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, under the direction of Andrey Boreyko. The work is one of the most demanding in the twentieth-century piano repertoire and combines extreme virtuosity, dramatic tension and orchestral writing of great impact. The programme opens with Celebration, a new work by Carlos Caires commissioned to mark the 70th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The world premiere establishes a direct link between contemporary Portuguese creation and the international symphonic repertoire. After the Prokofiev concerto and a 20-minute interval, the Gulbenkian Orchestra performs Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1. Written when the composer was only 18 years old, the work revealed from an early stage his irony, orchestral imagination and ability to alternate humour, restlessness and energy. The approximate duration is two hours. Yeol Eum Son, distinguished in international competitions and recognised for her interpretive clarity and intensity, takes on the solo part of one of Prokofiev's most challenging pieces.
