Lado B.B. - Brigitte Bardot Retrospective

Lado B.B. - Brigitte Bardot Retrospective

Lado B.B. - Retrospetiva Brigitte Bardot

Cinema

Monday 5 October · until 17 Oct

Cinemateca Portuguesa Santo António · Lisbon

The Cinemateca Portuguesa pays its first tribute to Brigitte Bardot with a retrospective covering her film career and her musical work with Serge Gainsbourg, filmed by François Reichenbach. Each session includes a surprise music video, and tickets cost €3.20.

Brigitte Bardot “After a youth devoted, and sacrificed, to cinema, she founded and managed from La Madrague a foundation in defense of animal rights. As she once said, “I gave my beauty and my youth to men. Now I will give my wisdom and my experience to animals” (quoted by Carla Quevedo in Vidas Perfeitas: Um Livro de Obituários [Perfect Lives: A Book of Obituaries]). Transformed by men and by cinema into an object of desire and exploitation, she had tempestuous relationships with some of them, starting with her first husband, Roger Vadim, who projected her to a new level of international recognition, thereby participating in the creation of one of the most inescapable sex symbols of the 20th century. She was “the” woman that God created in Vadim's famous film in which B.B. co-stars with Jean-Louis Trintignant, with whom she fell in love on and off screen, precipitating the end of her marriage to the director, although they remained friends and professional partners. (…). She thought about death every day of her life and, in fact, fatality or fatalism is very present in a significant part of the films that gave her fame, in a career lived intensely, begun in adolescence and concluded early, when she counted only 39 springs, the age at which she retired from showbiz to dedicate herself to the animal cause. (…). If there is the wild and damned side and the sensual and sensitive side in the story on and off screen, if we have the side of cinema (and men) and that of animals (and politics), it is worth recalling the actress's musical career, which goes far beyond the recording she made with Serge Gainsbourg, in 1967, pre-Jane Birkin, of Je t'aime… moi non plus. Bardot's most popular songs, some with Gainsbourg's collaboration, were celebrated on television in music videos by François Reichenbach, a somewhat forgotten filmmaker of the Nouvelle Vague. (…) Sounds and images to which the Cinemateca Portuguesa pays homage for the first time, planning to project a “surprise music video” for each session. Cinemateca Portuguesa.
