On 5 October 1910, D. Manuel II, D. Amélia and D. Maria Pia boarded the royal yacht Amélia at Praia dos Pescadores, in Ericeira, bound for Gibraltar and exile. After Gibraltar, D. Manuel II went to England, D. Amélia joined her family in France and D. Maria Pia returned to her native Piedmont. These were moments of great tension in which several objects were left behind.
