In Aparência e Abstração, Li Gang presents a decades-long photographic investigation of the horse, turning manes, coats and silhouettes into an abstract, expressive language poised between order and freedom.
In Aparência e Abstração, Li Gang pursues a photographic investigation dedicated to the horse that he has been developing for decades. After observing the animal as a living being, poetic presence and symbol of the cycle of life, the artist now shifts his gaze from representation to visual structure. The horse ceases to be merely a subject or recognisable figure and becomes a territory of shapes, lines, rhythms and textures, opening the photographic image to new possibilities of perception. The series crosses the abstraction of modern Western art with the lyrical and gestural dimension of traditional Chinese painting. Through framing, closeness to the bodies, the contrast between light and shadow and the capture of movement, Li Gang builds images situated between order and freedom, revelation and concealment, chance and control. Concepts such as yin and yang, movement and stillness, full and empty resonate in them. Without abandoning the direct and instantaneous nature of photography, the artist converts manes, coats and silhouettes into a language at once abstract and expressive, expanding both the vocabulary of contemporary photography and the cultural imagery associated with the horse.
