Casa do Alentejo Lisbon

Visits to the Alverca Palace, a late 17th-century building that once housed the capital's first casino, the Magestic Club, and has been the headquarters of the Casa do Alentejo since 1932; advance booking by email.

Built possibly in the late 17th century, the building where the Casa do Alentejo is now housed underwent profound modifications at the beginning of the 20th century. Of its earliest history, it is known that it belonged to an aristocratic family, the Paes de Amaral (Viscounts of Alverca), from whom it took the name and title of Palácio Paes do Amaral or Palácio Alverca. In the early 20th century (1917-1919) it was rented to a company that turned part of the old palace into the capital's first casino, the Magestic Club. The Palace thus underwent profound adaptation works under the direction of the architect Silva Júnior, which transformed it into the splendid building that has come down to our days. It was in 1932 that it was leased to the Grémio Alentejano, later renamed Casa do Alentejo, becoming the headquarters of the Alentejo Regionalist Association. In 1981 it was acquired from the descendants of the Paes de Amaral family and became the heritage of all Alentejans. Advance booking: [email protected]. gastronomy heritage.
