Thursday 1 October · until 5 Oct
Through interviews and collected material, Margarida Correia portrays a group of paratrooper nurses of the Portuguese army who served in Africa in the 1960s and 70s, recording and recovering individual and collective memories of a little-studied professional group.
The artist investigates, especially through photography, personal and institutional archives of specific communities, which she presents in exhibitions and through catalogues of great graphic richness. In recent years, she has worked on the memory of some Portuguese emigrant communities in the USA. From one of these exhibitions (at Cinzeiro 8, Museu de Electricidade, 2011), entitled New World Parkville, came a catalogue distinguished by critics. Her new proposal addresses a question that cuts across contemporary art, related to some historical issues of post-colonialism. Through interviews and the collection of material, the artist literally portrays a group of paratrooper nurses of the Portuguese army serving in Africa in the 1960s and 70s. Scenes of their professional life and everyday life in Africa, moments of work and leisure. Once again, it is about recording, recovering and fixing individual and collective memories of a professional group little studied and little known. Wednesday to Monday, from 10h to 19h. Technical sheet: Curated by João Pinharanda.
