The Portuguese Cinematheque launches a complete retrospective of producer Paulo Branco, screening around 270 feature films from his more than 45-year career at a pace of ten films a month until 2029, with monthly in-depth conversations with the producer.
This month marks the start of the most cyclopean programme this house has ever organised: a complete retrospective of producer Paulo Branco, that is, a programme made up of the roughly 270 feature films he has produced over more than 45 years, from 1980 to the present. The model defined for this colossal series is as follows: ten films will be presented each month over (at least) two and a half years. The order of presentation is neither chronological nor by director. Each month, films will be chosen and mixed from the nearly five decades of work Paulo Branco has already accumulated as a producer. There will also be, on a monthly basis, a more in-depth conversation with Paulo Branco (who, in addition, and subject to his availability, will attend some screenings), discussing the films shown during the month in question. To open this long cycle, which will run until 2029, we also include a preamble illustrating Paulo Branco's first stage in cinema, as a programmer, presenting five of the films he screened at the Action République cinema in Paris.
