Concert by the Metropolitana Soloists dedicated to Bohuslav Martinu, featuring works that reflect the neoclassical intimacy, jazz sounds and Bohemian identity of the composer.

Brief Introduction In this concert, three distinctive traits of Bohuslav Martinu's music stand out: neoclassical intimacy, jazz sounds and Bohemian cultural identity. In reverse order, the Metropolitana Soloists perform Les Rondes, a work premiered in Paris, but which would be quite different if the musician had not lived near Moravia in the first half of his life; the title alludes to the round dances of this eastern region of Czechia. In between, La Revue de Cuisine, a suite from a modernist ballet premiered in Prague, but which would be different if Martinu had not lived 17 years in France, until the arrival of German troops; these are four pieces that incorporate the new sounds coming from the Americas in the 1920s. Opening the program, one hears a Quartet for Oboe, Violin, Cello and Piano that was premiered in New York, but which would be different if Martinu were not a fan of Viennese classicism; composed in 1947, in full exile condition, it presents a lightness of writing and a formal simplicity that seem to pay tribute to Mozart.
