Brief Introduction Artistic direction Tarikavalli | Performers Tarikavalli, Catarina Mallika, Julieta Rousseau Dipaprakashe, In the Light of the Lamp is a Bharata Natyam performance inspired by the narratives of the Ramayana and the symbolism of Dipavali, the festival of lights celebrated between October and November by various communities in different parts of the world. From the symbolic image of the lamp, this creation evokes the passage between absence and presence, darkness and light, separation and reunion. The central piece of the performance, Sitarama Varnam, depicts episodes from the Ramayana, traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki and considered one of the two great Itihasas of India: epic narratives that convey ethical, philosophical and spiritual teachings. Through the language of Bharata Natyam, the performers give shape to a universe of contemplation, surrender and transformation, where the sacred manifests itself through movement. In this choreographic creation, the universe of the Ramayana takes shape through Sita and Rama, whose relationship expresses the union between the human and the divine, symbolizing courage, devotion and compassion. Although Valmiki's Ramayana does not establish a direct connection between Rama's victorious return to the kingdom of Ayodhya and Dipavali, several later traditions associate this episode with the imaginary of the Festival of Lights. Here, the flame of the lamp becomes a symbol of memory, hope and rebirth. Performed by the trio of dancers from the Tarikavalli Company, the performance invites the audience to enter a space where light expands in the darkness. The dances evoke the spirit of Dipavali and the teachings of the Ramayana, proposing an experience in which tradition, memory and contemporary creation meet under the symbol of light. Artistic File TARIKAVALLI COMPANY Tarikavalli, a pioneer in Portugal of classical Indian dance in the Bharata Natyam style, was at the origin of the implantation and dissemination of this art in the country. Heir to the tradition of the Pandanallur School, she was a direct disciple of the legendary masters U.S. Krishna Rao and Chandrabhaga Devi, essential figures in the revival of Bharata Natyam in the 20th century. Continuing this path, she founded and directs the Tarikavalli Dance Company, based at the Oeiras Dance Center (Algés), an artistic group dedicated to the art of Bharata Natyam. The Tarikavalli Dance Company brings together Tarikavalli, Catarina Mallika and Julieta Rousseau, a trio of artists who share a journey built over more than fifteen years, marked by training, creation and transmission. Trained by Tarikavalli since they were young, Catarina Mallika and Julieta Rousseau are co-founders and artistic collaborators of the Company, sharing the creation, development and continuity of its artistic project. Together, they preserve and renew the richness of the art of Bharata Natyam through this transmission between generations.
