Throughout the year, Japan hosts numerous traditional religious festivals and rituals of great social and cultural importance. With solemn ceremonial moments and others of pure fun, they originate mainly in Shintoism, the ancient worship of the kami spirits, to which Buddhist practices were added. The exhibition Japan: Festivals and Rituals presents these celebrations and their role in Japanese society, as axes of identity and community building, of their conception of the world and the forces that move it.
