Lotte in Weimar

Lotte in Weimar

Lotte em Weimar

Theatre

Thursday 5 November · until 15 Nov

Teatro da Comuna Lisbon

Based on Thomas Mann's novel and adapted by João Borges da Cunha, this play directed and performed by Sofia Borges follows Charlotte Kestner, Goethe's youthful love, as she returns to Weimar in 1816 and reunites with the aged poet. Reservations by phone at 914 073 060.

Now a widow, the court counselor Charlotte Kestner is back in Weimar. It is 1816. She is the one who, forty years ago, captured the heart of the giant Goethe — known to all as Lotte — and ended up as an unparalleled romantic character in Werther, that scandalous little book he wrote, the greatest poet of Germany. She comes to his city to visit her sister. Or maybe not. What we see is Lotte, entirely en bloc, crossing alone and free so many places of the wholly classical Weimar. Lotte ends up reencountering the giant, who in body and mind no longer is one, so many years has he. Whereas she, once wavering when rejecting him, and today, firm in congratulating him, even if no longer in the freshness of youth, appears bigger than life. A genuine character of great literature: empress of phlegm, of peace and of love. The true Lotte, authentic and real, whom Thomas Mann portrayed again in a novel, entangling her once more in the borders between fiction and reality. Reservations: T. 914 073 060 l [email protected]. Technical sheet: Based on Thomas Mann. Adaptation by João Borges da Cunha; staging and performance by Sofia Borges.
