Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro was born and lived most of his life in Lisbon, a city he cherished despite the attentive observation and irreverent humour with which he portrayed it daily in his periodicals and illustrations. His ceramic work and the exquisite tilework with which he decorated building façades have also come down to us and make for a delightful stroll through the city's downtown: Largo Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, Chiado, Rossio, Restauradores, Terreiro do Paço and Paços do Concelho are stopping points to hear History — necessarily with a smile.
