As part of Imago Lisboa, Miguel Rodrigues presents 'Carpe Diem, Houdini Is Not Dead', a multimedia installation built from his 2008 commutes along National Road 10 between Sacavém and Vila Franca de Xira, combining photography, sculpture and moving image.

'Carpe Diem, Houdini Is Not Dead' is a multimedia installation built from the memory of the commuting journeys I made in 2008 along the stretch of National Road 10 between Sacavém and Vila Franca de Xira, and from the attempt to map them photographically. It brings together photographic series, object-images, sculptural elements, notebooks, an object-book, a digital device in flux and moving image. The photographs are sequenced, printed, exhibited, removed, marked, folded and photographed again. They move from the plane to volume, return to the plane and accumulate the signs of their circulation. Folding, superimposition, re-photography, movement and duration place the two dimensions of the image in relation with the space and time lived. The work explores the poetics of the trace as a space opened by the repetition of a question for which the classical forms of document and landscape find no answer: what happens when the documentation of a routine can no longer restore the performative repetition that sustains it? In the duration of the lived, each repetition reconnects body, space and time; in representation, that continuity returns separated into fragments. This tension is not resolved through the construction of a more complete document or the recomposition of a total landscape. The experience of presence is brought into the constitution of the exhibition space, promoting, through movement, a contact between the experiences of perceived space and represented space. The public thus encounters repetition again, reconnecting what the images fragmented. Understanding the work therefore requires a perception of the self: attention to the position of the body, to its movements, to duration and to the changes of perception itself. 24, 25, 30 and 31 October, from 15h to 19h.
