The fifth and final session of the "Pocket History of Music" cycle, led by Simão Quinta, covering Post-Romanticism and the 20th century, from the break with tonality and Schoenberg's atonalism to the experiments of Debussy, Cage and Stockhausen.

Synopsis A Pocket History of Music: Post-Romanticism and the 20th Century, led by Simão Quinta, is the fifth and final stage of this journey through the History of Western Music - a journey that now reaches a period in which the rules are constantly being changed. The 20th century brought with it profound political, social, cultural and ideological changes, which were inevitably reflected in the arts. In music, these transformations translated into the questioning of the tonal tradition, the emergence of new languages and aesthetics, the development of sound recording and reproduction technologies, as well as the very transformation of the modes of production, circulation and listening of music. In this final session, we will go through some of these changes: from the chromaticism of Post-Romanticism and the break with tonality to Schoenberg's atonalism; from the new conceptions of timbre and sound to the experiments of Debussy, Cage and Stockhausen. Between the concert hall, the recording studio and popular culture, we will seek to understand how the 20th century not only transformed the music we listen to, but also the very idea of what music can be.
