Museu do Aljube Resistance and Freedom

Museu do Aljube Resistance and Freedom

Museu do Aljube Resistência e Liberdade

Exhibition 4€ 13–18

Saturday 3 October · until 31 Dec

Museu do Aljube Santa Maria Maior · Lisbon

Housed in the former political prison of the Aljube, this museum portrays the Portuguese dictatorial regime from 1926 to 1974, its mechanisms of repression, the resistance movements, the anticolonial struggle and the 25 April 1974 revolution. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm, it also offers temporary exhibitions, guided visits, film screenings and debates on citizenship and human rights.

Synopsis Through its long-term exhibition, it characterizes the Portuguese dictatorial regime (1926-1974), its means of repression and oppression (censorship, the police forces and the political courts), the resistance of the oppositions (semilegal and clandestine), the anticolonial struggle and the 25th of April of 1974. It regularly promotes temporary exhibitions around themes related to its collection, with parallel programming, where the resistance of the past intersects with the defense of citizenship and human rights in the present. The Museum has a documentation center, where it provides specialized literature, develops research activities, processes and shares a documentary archive and promotes a broad testimonial collection of the resisters to the dictatorship. In addition to educational work with schools and the general public, other regular activities are promoted, such as guided visits, conversation cycles and sessions with cinema and debate. Visitors can also see part of the structures of the building where the museum is housed and an archaeological exhibition unearthed from its basement. Inaugurated on April 25, 2015, the building recovery and adaptation project is by architects Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira.
