Synopsis: Where did blackface begin? When does blackface end? Blackface is a solo show, written and directed by Marco Mendonça, a musical lecture, between stand-up and fantasy, between satire and physical theatre, between burlesque and documentary. Starting from personal experiences and the history of blackface as a racist theatrical practice, from its roots in the USA to the Portuguese cases, Marco Mendonça seeks the limits of what can, or cannot, be represented on a stage. Considering the extensive library of events in which this racist practice was used to portray Black people as inferior members of Portuguese society, is it possible to believe that racism does not exist in Portugal? After having produced his second creation, Reparations Baby!, premiered in 2025, the D. Maria II now hosts a return to the stage of Marco Mendonça's first show as a creator. Conversation with artists on 30 May. Accessibility: Session with Portuguese Sign Language interpretation and audio description on 30 May.
