From the delicate trace of hasta abhinaya, the alphabet of symbolic hand gestures, we move through the precision of isolated movement, the living pulse of tala, and arrive at the expressive universe of bhava, where the body becomes a vehicle for emotions. An experience of awareness, technique and presence, in which the dancer/performer is invited to inhabit time, sound and feeling in every movement. Ideal for dancers and actors of various styles, especially in the field of Indian Classical Dance. Open to practitioners of all levels, curious and passionate about the wisdom and culture of India. 10 October Session 1 - Hasta abhinaya: the alphabet of gesture In this session we will talk about the symbolism of hand gestures and the messages they communicate. Participants will learn the gestures (hasta abhinaya) and their multiple applications (viniyogas). They will also learn to recite the names of the gestures, as well as their use in creating dialogues and in a small dance piece. 17 October Session 2 - Isolated Movement: Awareness, Technique and Expression A session dedicated to the study of isolated body movements: eye movements (drishti bheda), head (shiro bheda), neck (griva bheda), feet (pada bheda), among others. Ideal for dancers and actors, activating body awareness and expressiveness, precision and subtlety, which are the foundation of Indian classical dances and can be applied in different contexts. 24 October Session 3 Tala: The Time that Sustains the Dance In this session, we will dive into the universe of tala, the rhythmic system that structures and gives life to Bharatanatyam. Through body exercises, rhythmic counts and small sequences of adavus (steps), we will explore how time manifests in the body, sustaining movement and expression. The dancer's feet become percussion instruments, while the rest of the body expresses itself fluidly. 31 October
Session 4 'Bhava: exploring the emotions' A session dedicated to the study of emotional expression in Bharatanatyam. Based on the nine fundamental emotions (navarasa) described in Indian performing arts treatises and the expressive language (abhinaya), we will work with emotions as paths towards an authentic and sensitive stage presence.
