Fourth session of the Transatlantic Biographies programme, devoted to the Portuguese Inquisition trials of José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso, enslaved Black men accused of sorcery with mandinga pouches, and to the exchange of knowledge and beliefs in the African diaspora.

Brief Introduction Transatlantic Biographies is a programme of visits to the permanent exhibition of the Museu de Lisboa, Palácio Pimenta, followed by a conversation about slavery, the Inquisition and religiosity. The fourth session analyses the Portuguese Inquisition proceedings brought against the mandingueiros José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso. Synopsis In 1730, José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso, enslaved Black men born in the former kingdom of Uidá (present-day Republic of Benin), were accused of sorcery practices with mandinga pouches, associated with spiritual systems of the Afro-Portuguese-Brazilian symbolic universe. The life paths of these two men reveal an intense exchange of knowledge and beliefs in the African diaspora. The analysis focuses on inquisitorial dynamics, the circuits of knowledge sharing and the mechanisms of resistance and cultural circularity in a colonial context. This circular system places Lisbon at the centre of a trade network of mandinga pouches between the free and enslaved population. In yet another session of the Transatlantic Biographies programme, the aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relations and exchanges between religiosity, power and domination in the Atlantic space. Breve Introdução Biografias Transatlânticas é um programa de visitas à exposição permanente do Museu de Lisboa , Palácio Pimenta, seguidas de uma conversa em torno da escravatura, a inquisição e a religiosidade. A quarta sessão analisa os processos da Inquisição portuguesa movidos contra os mandingueiros José Francisco Pereira e José Francisco Pedroso. Sinopse Em 1730, José Francisco Pereira e José Francisco Pedroso, homens negros escravizados e naturais do antigo reino de Uidá (atual República do Benim), foram acusados de práticas de feitiçaria com bolsas de mandinga, associadas a sistemas espirituais do universo simbólico afro-luso-brasileiro. Os percursos de vida destes dois homens revelam uma intensa troca de saberes e crenças na diáspora africana. A análise incide sobre as dinâmicas inquisitoriais, os circuitos de partilha de saberes e os mecanismos de resistência e circularidade cultural em contexto colonial. Este sistema circular coloca Lisboa no centro de uma rede de comércio de bolsas de mandinga entre a população livre e escravizada. Em mais uma sessão do programa Biografias Transatlânticas , procura-se contribuir para uma compreensão mais aprofundada das relações e trocas entre religiosidade, poder e dominação no espaço atlântico.
