Moroccan choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen creates Este Mundo with the Madeira-based company Dançando com a Diferença — a collage of fantasies, gestures and chance built from the singularity of five performers, where fado, bells and Bollywood rhythms meet without anyone having to resemble anyone else.

Full details

Synopsis A collage of fantasies, gestures and coincidences, built from the singularity of five performers. In Este Mundo, five performers walk, breathe, curl up, roll, come closer, move apart. They dance with pleasure or are simply there. Bouchra Ouizguen starts from these simple gestures and from what each person brings with them to build a piece where no one has to resemble anyone else. Bárbara is lightness. Sofia, verticality. Sara, warmth and energy. Telmo, weight and stability. Joana, suspension and balance. They are not characters, but qualities from which gestures, images and relationships are built. Este Mundo brings together things that do not need to match. Fado, bells, echoes that bring Madeira and Morocco closer, the rhythms and vibrant colours of Bollywood. Personal fantasies, everyday gestures, memories, chance, humour, silence and the pleasure of doing something just because. Perhaps that is what keeps this world alive: people together, without any of them having to stop being singular in order to be part of the same place. Bouchra Ouizguen is a Moroccan dancer and choreographer, born in 1980 in Ouarzazate. She lives and works in Marrakech, where she has been involved in developing a local choreographic scene since 1998. Her work is fuelled by her interest in cinema, literature and music. In the liberating Madame Plaza (SACD Choreographic Revelation Prize), she shares the stage with artists from the Aïta tradition. She continued her collaboration with these artists in Ha! (2013). In February 2014, she created Corbeaux, a sculpture-piece for 17 dancers, presented at the Art In Marrakech Biennale. In 2015, she brought together four artists who had already taken part in previous works to create Ottof. In 2017, she imagined Jerada for the dancers of Carte Blanche, the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance (Critics' Prize for Best Dance Show in Norway). In 2022, she created Eléphant, a choreographic and musical piece. They Always Come Back, a performance designed for and with a group of amateur participants, was presented at the 2025 edition of the Festival d'Avignon. Her shows are presented internationally in institutions such as the Tate Modern, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, the Brooklyn Museum, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, among others. Dancing with a Difference (DcD) is a Portuguese professional contemporary dance company, recognised for its artistic innovation, technical excellence and promotion of body diversity. Since its foundation in Madeira, in 2001, the company has asserted the importance of the Non-Normative Body/Dissident Body on national and international stages. Show original (Portuguese)
