Brief Introduction JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY Workshop With Yuko Kase DATES Tuesday | September 29 HOURS 11:00 to 13:00 PARTICIPANTS Max. 12 PRICE €25 Ages 16+ [indicative age] SHODO Considered one of the most traditional arts of Japan, calligraphy [SHODO] is also one of the oldest. The writing of ideograms was introduced to Japan from China in the 5th century, and from the outset, the taste and admiration for this exquisite writing as an art form were cultivated, under Chinese influence. Even today, it is part of the subjects taught in Japan from the 1st year of schooling. Starting with a 4B graphite pencil, children imitate models of characters balanced and harmoniously drawn on paper. Years later, they move on to practicing SHODO with brush and ink on rice paper. The first steps of learning always consist of imitating/copying models of classical writings of great beauty. Beyond formal education, a large number of students attend a master's house (Shodo salon) to perfect their technique. The two words that refer to Japanese calligraphy are sho and shodo. Although "sho" is part of the word "shodo", in the current context of arts in Japan, these words refer to distinct views of Japanese calligraphy. This arose in the post-war period, a time of great transformation in the world of Japanese calligraphy. There were calligraphers who began to question the nature of their art, better known as shodo, the way of writing -, because they saw in calligraphy "something more", a means through which they could express, rather than copy models, learn techniques or have a "beautiful calligraphy". This reflection contributed to further enriching this art. Thus, specific styles developed, whose subjective expressive dimension resulted in abstract and even illegible forms. A escrita dos ideogramas foi introduzida no Japão vinda da China, no século V, e, desde logo, o gosto e admiração por esta requintada escrita como uma forma de arte foram cultivados, na senda da influência chinesa. Ainda hoje, faz parte das disciplinas ensinadas no Japão desde o 1.º ano da escolaridade. Iniciando-se com um lápis de grafite 4B, as crianças imitam os modelos dos caracteres equilibrada e harmoniosamente desenhados na folha de papel. Anos depois, passa-se a praticar o SHODO com pincel e tinta, sobre papel de arroz. Os primeiros passos da aprendizagem consistem sempre em imitar/copiar os modelos das escritas clássicas, de grande beleza. Para além do ensino oficial, há um grande número de alunos que frequenta a casa de um mestre (salão de Shodo) para aperfeiçoar a sua técnica. As duas palavras que se referem à caligrafia japonesa são sho e shodo. Embora “sho” faça parte da palavra “shodo”, no contexto actual das artes no Japão, essas palavras referem-se a visões distintas da caligrafia japonesa. Isto surgiu no pós-guerra, período de grande transformação no mundo da caligrafia japonesa. Houve calígrafos que começaram a questionar a natureza da sua arte , mais conhecida como shodo, o caminho da escrita -, porque viam na caligrafia “algo mais”, um meio através do qual poderiam expressar, mais do que copiar modelos, aprender técnicas ou ter uma “bela caligrafia”. Esta reflexão contribuiu para enriquecer ainda mais esta arte. Assim desenvolveram-se estilos específicos, cuja dimensão expressiva subjectiva resultou em formas abstractas e mesmo ilegíveis.
